Project Abundant Life is a ministry to single moms who are motivated but need the relational and financial support to make their life vision a reality. In Alabama, nearly half of single mom households live in poverty. The cycle of poverty often stems from limited education and lack of affordable housing. Our mission is to offer a Christian community where mothers can find hope and new opportunities. We believe that God calls us, as His Church, to care for those without husbands or fathers.
Project Abundant Life provides transitional housing to a single mom and her children for up to 2 years. We have three 2 bedroom, fully furnished apartments which are rented out at reduced cost. Residents are required to either work full time or be enrolled in school and work part-time as they focus on career development and self-sufficiency. Mothers pay 30% of their income towards rent and utilities in order to help them transition to market-rate housing.
Each family has a team of 6-10 mentors who serve as their support team while they are living at PAL. Mentors offer emotional support as well as practical guidance. The teams’ role is to create a community where each family member can feel loved, accepted, and supported. Mentors are not expected to be perfect role models, but rather to model what it looks like to follow Christ and live out their faith in everyday life.
Moms are selected for PAL based on their motivation and commitment to growth. The Director’s role is to help each mom identify what her personal vision for her life looks like. Topics in this discussion would include education, employment, finances, parenting, health, and faith. Based on what she envisions, a service agreement is developed with specific goals and action items. Linkage to community resources and programs for herself and her children is also provided.
